The Independence area has supported natural food buying clubs since 1980. These clubs have varied greatly in size, structure and level of member participation. The Southeast Kansas Buying Club was started in 2006 to fill the continuing need.
The purpose of the SEKS Buying Club is to provide members with high quality natural foods, at a reasonable cost while creating a supportive network.
Our club consists of a great variety of different folks: those interested in bulk buying; vegetarians/vegans; special dietary needs such as wheat free or dairy free; and overall, people who want a better quality of healthy foods to choose from.
Becoming a member of the Southeast Kansas Buying Club is easy. There are a few simple steps to take in the beginning. Deciding if you want to be a full club member or Azure only is the first step.
Full Club Members: you need to contact the New Member Coordinator who can guide you through the process and answer your club related questions. Also you need to read through the member handbook and see if you are able to meet the membership requirements listed therein. Contact the NMC at: SEKSBuyingClub@gmail.com
You will need to pay an annual membership fee of $12.00 for working members and $48.00 for non working members. However, if you are interested in a “test drive” of the club we allow that too! You get to place one order without membership fees to see if this style of bulk ordering and club membership works for you. After you make your decision to join and pay your dues, you can sign up for a job to become a working member (openings vary) in order to get the “working member” discount, currently 10 percent off on regularly priced products & reduced priced dues. Non-working members do not receive any discounts.
Members are responsible for participating in the club, contributing to the work of the club, including annual meetings, committees, etc. You also need to submit your order by the deadline, be aware of delivery schedules, call in to find out what time delivery is if necessary, and pick up your order in a prompt manner, bringing payment due.
Azure Only: Those interested in only ordering from Azure Standard do not have to pay full dues but neither do they get the benefits of full club membership. Azure only members are asked to make a donation of 25¢ each order cycle. This donation goes towards the building fund. Alternately you can pay a full year’s order cycle at once, $3.00. This is on the “honor system” and donations should be placed in the collection tin at the delivery site, not added to your total bill.
It’s pretty simple to join. We are looking forward to cooperating together with you!
SEKS Buying Club, a great way to get great food!
Just wondering were you are located? I live in Lees Summit, MO. I have never belonged to a coop but have always been interested. Could you tell me a little about it? Thank you. Janet Joseph
Hi Janet, thanks for your inquiry. We are located in Independence, KS. Just about 20 miles from the Oklahoma border. If you are interested in finding a local buying club, you can google United Natural Foods, Inc [UNFI for short] and contact them for the nearest buying club. I’m sure that you will have one close to your area! Thanks again!
